Georgy Sergeevich Porshnyakov created and comprehensively proved the concept of the nappe tectonics of the Southern Tien Shan. He was not only an excellent scientist, but also unsurpassed teacher in both geology and attitude to life. I am grateful to him for the following lessons: 1) Sometimes it happens that it is difficult to love a profession. It is easier to love your knowledge in it; 2) It is better not to go to fields where your knowledge is limited; 3) Be able to see and understand and feel the structural relationships of geological complexes; 4) The multi-kilometer scale thrust may look as “invisible” fault zones. Do not mess them; 5) When changing paradigms in science, the professionalism of the researcher may decline, therefore it is dangerous to follow the current fashion without full understanding; 6) Write so that you will never regret about what you’ve written.
