Author Guidelines

Dear authors!

We draw attention to the fact that since December 5, 2018, the acceptance of articles in the journal “Vestnik of St. Petersburg University. Earth sciences" will be held only through the site https://escjournal.spbu.ru/. Articles that are sent to the email address geovestnik@spbu.ru will not be considered. Detailed submission guideline.

I. Submissions Principles

1.1. Manuscripts submitted for publication must be original and previously unpublished. The recommended size of a submission is 50,000 characters, including spaces. The decision to accept or reject a submission is taken by the editorial board of the series after a process of review and discussion. The decision of the editorial board is recorded in the meeting’s minutes.

1.2. The submission will be refereed in accordance with our Referee and Review Policy.

1.3. No fee is charged for manuscript submissions.

II. Manuscript Guidelines

2.1 Manuscript structure:
Write the manuscript in the following order:
— a UDC (Universal Decimal Classification) index, which should reflect in detail the research area (see http://teacode.com/online/udc/);
— article title;
— group of authors with affiliation (complete names of the author and co-authors with full information about places of employment, institutional affiliation and contact information, especially email and ORCID numeric identifier);
— contact information for the first author: telephone, e-mail and work address with an index and settlement;
— an abstract and keywords in English (the volume of the abstract should be about 200-350 words)
— the main text of the article;
— bibliography (references provided in oriental languages should be submitted also in Roman alphabet);
— drawings;
— tables;

2.2. Text formatting:
We recommend using the predefined text and paragraph parameters in the text editor used.

Please use 12 font size and 1.5 line spacing for all text, including the names of figures, tables, links. You can use the saturation and font style (bold, italics) to emphasize some elements.

Pages should be numbered, margins of at least 2.5 cm. Throughout the document it is necessary to make a continuous numbering of lines.

2.3. Figures:
Figures with captions should be inserted into the main file of the article after the list of references, and also attached to the manuscript by separate graphic files.

— Drawings must be of proper quality (vector or raster with a density of points of at least 300dpi). Whenever possible, try to use grayscale for simple images.
— Drawings are accepted in TIFF, JPG, PNG, EPS formats. If the drawings are made in a vector graphics editor, provide their original versions.
— In vector drawings translate fonts into curves to avoid incompatibility of font libraries.
— Use only standard “academic” fonts on your illustrations.
— The size of the fonts in the pictures should match the size of the main text.
— The numbering of the figures should correspond to their sequence in the text.
— Signatures to the drawings should be in the style of the main text.
— Use logical names for image files, for example: fig01.jpg, fig02.png.
— When using borrowed data in pictures, be sure to indicate their source.

2.4. Supplements:
Supplements are published together with the article on the journal's website, but are not included in the printed version. A direct hyperlink leads from the text of the article to the supplements. Any information can be placed in supplements: data arrays, text, graphics, video, etc. Supplements are not limited in size and remain in the author's edition.
If you want to publish a large database, or a series of photographs or graphs, we recommend that you arrange them as Supplements. In the text, you just need to indicate a link to them (for example, see Supplement 1), and also add a separate file when downloading.
There are no strict requirements for the design of supplements, add separate files (for example, MS Excel), or make documents with supplements inside (in such cases, we recommend the rules applicable to articles).

2.5. Formulas and Equations:
— equations and formulas should be submitted in a regular MS Word plug-in, via MathType, or in the Equation Editor in OpenOffice Math;
— equations and formulas should be placed on a separate line. Above and below each formula or equation should be left at least one free line. If the equation does not fit on one line, it should be moved after the equal sign (=) or after the plus sign (+), minus (-), multiplication (×), division (:) or other mathematical signs, and the sign is repeated at the beginning of the following line.
— an explanation of the symbols and numerical values of coefficients should be placed directly under the formula in the same sequence in which they were presented in the formula.
— formulas in the report should be numerated by ordinal numbering within the entire report with the help of Arabic numerals in parentheses at the far right side on the line.

For example

y = ax2 + bx + c                                         (1)

The text’s references to the serial numbers of the formulas must be given in parentheses. For example — ... in the formula (1).

The order of presentation of equations in article is the same as for the formulas.

2.6. Footnotes, links and references:
Footnotes are located at the bottom of the page. The numeration is sequential throughout the text, by order of mention.

The text should be presented as:
Perotti suggests that in all these examples γλαυκός means "brilliant" and refers not only to the leaves, but also the fruits of the olive tree1.

And as a footnote:
1 The epithet of sea γλαυκός we'll leave without translation, as it is its meaning we’ll try to clarify in this paper.

2.7. References:
"Vestnik of St. Petersburg University. Earth Sciences" follows Harvard citation style. The format of the design of links and the list of references can be found  here. We strongly recommend using the Mendeley app and the Mendeley add-in for Word to create a list of references and links in the text.

Please make sure that all references to sources in the text of the article are displayed in the list of references. Check the design of the links in the list of references. If they do not comply with the rules of the journal, the article may be rejected.
